Getting around London

The Underground

Probably one of the best known methods of transport around London. There are 11 different lines - each has a name and is identified by a different colour. The cost of a ticket is determined by how many zones you cross (6 zones in total). All tickets are available from either an automated ticket machine or a ticket clerk.

South London is not covered as thoroughly as North London by the Tube. But there are equally as efficient and smooth methods of transport. These include: buses, trains and trams.

Tram

The best form of transport to get from Wimbledon through Croydon to either Bromley or New Addington. It is immensely popular because it is very quick, quiet, clean and comfortable. Once you have tried the tram, nothing else compares.

Bus

Best known are the red double-decker buses. These provide an excellent cover of London and Greater London and offer a much better view than the tube. Buses are cheaper! Ask the Driver if you are not sure which stop to get off.

British Rail

This is surprisingly a very quick and efficient transport system. It takes only 14 minutes to travel from London Bridge down to East Croydon (express) or 16 minutes to travel from Victoria down to East Croydon (express). There are many different train services to choose from. Some are better than others.

Fares

The most economic way to travel is via Travel Cards. Available on a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis, these passes offer significant savings over the purchase of one-journey tickets and are valid on all forms of transport - bus, train, tube, tram. You will need a travel identification card which you can get at train stations or some newsagents and convenience stores.
